Network Accounts & Access

The University provides faculty, staff, and students a variety of computing resources and online services. A UW NetID (an account name that identifies you as a member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison community) and password is required to access most of these services. MERIT manages other classes of accounts, including the SoE-AD account which authorizes access to SoE computers, printers and servers; the SoE WebID account which authorizes content editors to access departmental and unit websites, and the Digital Measures account which authorizes faculty and staff to access the web-based solution to capture and share information related to teaching, research, and service activities.

Desktop Security

MERIT works closely with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) Technical Services and the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) to safeguard the School of Education's computing resources and data. Together we provide services such as desktop configuration, authentication systems, antivirus software, firewalls and network monitoring.


MERIT staff provide a number of options for accessing and learning about compatible software resources.


MERIT consultants evaluate computing needs and recommend computers, printers and other peripherals that let faculty and staff accomplish their work goals. Hardware installation, computer maintenance and assistance with warranty repairs are also offered by MERIT consultants.

Help Desk

The MERIT Help Desk is the School's central support service for IT, especially in the areas of systems trouble, network connectivity, and the use of supported desktop applications.

Course Website Support

MERIT staff provides support for the Learn@UW suite of instructional tools including Desire2Learn, Moodle, Google Apps, Kaltura, and Blackboard Collaborate.

Facilities - Classrooms & Labs

Macintosh and PC instructional computer labs, active learning space, and meeting spaces are managed by MERIT.

Infrastructure Management

MERIT in partnership with WCER Technical Services and DoIT to provide foundational network, security and networked storage solutions to the School of Education.

Facilities - Infrastructure

MERIT manages both a data center and cold room for the School of Education and other UW-Madison partners.


The conception and creation of distinctive graphics for instructional graphics, newsletters, posters, annual reports, departmental and project promotional materials, large or small posters, signs, brochures, book jackets, custom illustrations, and presentation graphics.


MERIT provides a wide variety of video and audio production services ranging from the simple documentation of a speaker to elaborate, scripted and edited instructional and promotional programs. MERIT records on-location or in our studio.


MERIT offers portrait photography and stock photography consultation.


MERIT Library has multiple printing options from standard B&W printing to color printing, to poster printing and hot roll lamination.

Web Development

Tools and services for publishing and managing online content. A variety of options allow the School of Education community to create and administer a dynamic, secure, and recognizable web presence.

Web Support

Users of the Sitefinity CMS in the UW School of Education can request assistance for issues with editing and publishing content.

Equipment Loan

Students enrolled in a School of Education course, and faculty & staff working for a department or unit in the School of Education are eligible to check out equipment from MERIT. All users are required to fill out an equipment use agreement form each academic term.

A/V Technology

MERIT offers consultation on A/V technology purchases and installation within your department or unit. MERIT provides A/V support for technology infused School of Education classrooms and meeting spaces.

Computer Lab Support

The instructional computer labs in MERIT Library are supported by MERIT staff. The labs are intended to provide instructional support for technology and computer based courses in the School of Education. Both Macintosh and PC hardware and software are supported in these classrooms.


School of Education faculty, staff and students, and area teachers are invited to participate in MERIT's workshop program. In addition to scheduled workshops, sessions can be designed or adapted as course-integrated instruction for specific classes, or scheduled as consultation for individuals, meetings, or groups.

Course-Related Instruction (CRI)

MERIT staff members are available to assist you with mapping your instructional goals to the use of new tools. Consider scheduling one or more MERIT instruction sessions for your classes. Course-integrated instruction will be scheduled at your convenience and tailored to the content needs of your class, meeting or group.

Materials Loan

The Library collection, supporting the School of Education's Teacher Certification Programs, includes scholarly and PreK-12 print, media, and electronic information sources. The collection is developed in collaboration with the Libraries of the UW-Madison and of the UW System. New materials suggestions for the MERIT Library are welcome and encouraged in order to insure our materials are aligned with changing curriculum needs.

Course Reserves

The Reserve Collection at MERIT Library is intended to provide limited access to high-demand materials for School of Education courses, particularly those which support the teacher training and preparation programs. Items in this collection are submitted by instructors for students currently enrolled in UW-Madison and have restricted circulation periods.

Library Research

MERIT Library provides research help and guidance for students, faculty and staff of the School of Education. Whenever possible we provide assistance to anyone interested in education research, including other UW affiliates, Wisconsin educators and citizens.
